wammu – Connecting to Huawei E160 modem

Problem:
Needed to be able to send messages to check account balance from modem. The alternative was to remove sim card from modem, insert to a phone, check credit or buy data bundle, then insert back to modem. Just too much work.

Solution:
Wammu. Installed it using synaptic. wammu version on debian squeeze is 0.33.

Configuration settings that worked for me were.

less ~/.gammurc
[gammu]
connection = AT
synchronizetime = yes
logformat = errors
logfile = /home/user/gammu.log
port = /dev/ttyUSB0
name = Huawei E160

I also added the user to uucp and dailout groups.

NB. You can not connect to the modem if it is also connected to the Net.
